Merry-Go-Round Second Draft: Chapter Three
Chapter Three – Reset
The group stood simply in silence. Nothing could be said at the spectacle that stood in front of them.
Sieural walked forward a few steps, staring at the charred remains of his house. However, unexpectedly, he smiled.
“One day late.” He said to himself, almost laughing.
“What?” Soriana asked.
“Last time this happened, it was on my birthday. This time, it’s one day late.”
Unable to respond, the group let Sieural walk up to the charred remains of his wooden house.
“Whatever.” He sighed, and walked back to the group.
“What do you mean whatever?” Deshael yelled.
“Huh?” Sieural asked, confused by Deshael’s outburst.
“Yeah! I don’t want to see your damned apathetic attitude right now. Especially now.” Oaklyn also yelled.
“Whatever.”
Oaklyn hit Sieural on the head. “No! Not whatever!”
Soriana, nearly in tears, continued. “She’s right, Sieural…”
As Sieural began to reply, Alexis, from out of nowhere, embraced him from behind.
“Sieural!!”
Surprised, Sieural fell forward.
“Ow.” As he climbed to his feet, he sighed. “It’s fine. Enough with the sadness and tears. This is nothing. I’ve already been through this once before.”
“Fine? This is fine?” Deshael continued to yell. “Even if you don’t care, we do! All of us worked together to rebuild your house last time! Besides, where would you sleep?”
“Hmmm… I don’t think the grass is that uncomfortable.” Sieural replied, sitting down.
“No! No way! Nooooo waaaaay!” Oaklyn exclaimed, grabbing Sieural’s hair and pulling him off the ground. “Anyone have a free room for this idiot?”
After a few moments of silence, Alexis said, “Sorry… I don’t. I don’t… really live in Kerieal anymore.”
Deshael continued, “Hey, Oaklyn, you thought of the idea, don’t you have a place for him?”
“Nope. No room at all. Sorry, Sieural.” Oaklyn sighed.
“I’m telling you guys… I’ll be FINE!” Sieural sighed, as he looked across the charred lot of land once more.
After another moment of silence, Soriana said, “Umm… There’s an open room in my house… my brother recently moved out.”
“Really, Sory? That’s great!” Oaklyn smiled. “Sieural, you can sleep in Sory’s house.”
“I mean it! I’ll be okay.” Sieural, continued to protest.
“No, it’s not! Sieural can use that empty room, right, Sory?” Oaklyn continued.
“Yes… I think it’s fine.” Soriana replied.
Sieural decided it wasn’t worth the energy to complain, and replied, “Whatever. Thanks, Soriana.”
“I… It’s no problem. It’s better if I try and help you through this…” Soriana smiled.
As the group slowly separated and returned to their respective houses, Sieural followed Soriana to her’s.
As they walked, Soriana said, “This is really the second time…”
“Yeah.” Sieural couldn’t respond, and a long period of silence followed.
“Are you sure it’s okay if I sleep in your house? Wouldn’t your parents disapprove?”
“It should be fine… I have to ask, though. I think my my mom will be fine with it.”
~~~~~
“Is that okay? Of course it is!” Soriana’s mom exclaimed with a huge smile.
“Really?” Sieural asked once more.
“Of course! You’ve been taking care of Soriana for many years now. It’s the least we can do to help if you don’t have anywhere to stay.”
“Thank you very much.” Sieural replied.
“Sory, show him to Sei’s room. I need to go shopping.”
Soriana nodded, and began walking up the nearby stairs. Sieural walked close behind her. When they reached the room, Soriana commented, “Sorry, it’s a little messy. Seiriean moved out just recently… there’s still a bunch of stuff of his here. He says he’ll come back for them soon.”
“Ah, that’s fine.” Sieural smiled, as he sat on one of the chairs in the room.
“Okay… umm… Do you want to take a bath? You’re probably tired after today’s practice class…”
“You go first. You’re probably just as tired. Besides, you’re a girl. You probably want to take one more than me.” Sieural grinned.
Soriana blushed, and replied, “Oh… umm… Okay. I’ll take one first.”
As Soriana left the room, Sieural sighed and looked around the room. A box of things laid on the ground next to the bed. He walked over to it, and opened it.
“Ah!” A voice came from the doorway leading to the main hall.
“Sory!! There’s a burglar trying to take Sei-Sei’s stuff!!” That same voice called out.
Sieural paused for moment, then sighed.
~~~~~
“Sorry…” The young girl apologized, blushing.
“It’s not your fault. There was no warning for me being here.” Sieural smiled.
“Introduce yourself, Ari.” Soriana said.
“Oh… ohh… umm… I’m Ariana. Sory’s little sister.” Ariana said, smiling weakly.
“Nice to meet you, Ariana.” Sieural smiled, holding out his hand.
Ariana, without replying, blushed, and hid behind Soriana.
Soriana sighed, and said to Sieural, “She’s… shy.”
“I can see that.” Sieural smiled. “Well, if so, then… well, I’ll try not to bother you, Ariana.”
“Ohh… umm… no, it’s not your fault… It’s… mine.” Ariana stuttered.
Sieural replied, “It’s okay.”
Soriana smiled, and said, “Now that the confusion has been cleared… I’m going to take a bath.”
“Okay.” Sieural replied.
As Soriana walked upstairs, Ariana asked, “Umm… Sieural…”
“Yes?”
“Do… you want some water?”
“Ah… that would be nice. Thank you very much.”
Ariana walked to the set of cabinets, and reached up to open the upper door. Unable to reach it, she tried to jump,and grabbed hold of the handle. However, unable to reach the floor, she could not open the cabinet.
“Ahhh…” Ariana sighed, hanging about a foot off the floor. “Can you help me?”
Sieural laughed, and replied, “Sure.”
As he walked to the cabinet, the handle snapped off the door, and Ariana began falling. Sieural immediately reacted, and caught her.
“Ah… thank you so much.” Ariana commented, blushing.
“Careful.” Sieural replied, grinning.
“I was trying to do what Sory would do… I can’t do it, though…” Ariana began to cry.
“It’s okay. You’re perfectly fine without being like Soriana.” Sieural smiled.
Just then, the front door opened, and a girl, older than Ariana, but younger than Soriana, walked in. The girl looked at Sieural holding Ariana, and yelled, “What are you doing to Ari?!!!”
Sieural sighed again.
~~~~~
“I see… you’re staying here?” The girl said, frowning.
Sieural nodded.
“Then why was Ari crying?”
“Ohh… umm… that was my fault… I was trying to get Sieural some water, but I couldn’t reach the cabinet… So… I jumped.” Ariana replied. “Then the handle broke… and Sieural saved me.”
“I see.”
“Ohh… umm… umm… introduce yourself…” Ariana said.
Sieural laughed quietly to himself at Ariana trying to imitate Soriana.
“Yeah. I’m Shiriana. Ariana’s older sister, and Soriana’s younger sister. Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you, too, Shiriana.” The two shook hands.
“Anyway, why are you staying here? How are you related to Sory? Wait… are you her boyfriend?!”
“Eh?! You’re Sory’s boyfriend?!” Ariana exclaimed, blushing.
“Wha? I’m–” Sieural tried to protest.
“No way! How can someone like you be her boyfriend? Sory needs someone better than you! A lot better than you!” Shiriana exclaimed, almost yelling.
“Hey–” Sieural once again tried to counter her argument.
“That’s not true… Sieural is a good person. It’s… just embarassing! Soriana has a boyfriend!” Ariana, still blushing, continued.
“Like I was trying to say–”
“Yeah right! Soriana works so hard, and deserves someone who looks better than this! She deserves the knight in shining armor kind of person!” Shiriana yelled.
“You two–”
“He’s not my boyfriend!!” Soriana exclaimed blushing furiously, walking down the stairs into the main room.
“Oh.” Shiriana and Ariana replied in unison.
Sieural sighed and nodded.
Soriana explained the story of Sieural’s current homeless-ness, and Shiriana replied, “I see. Sorry, Sieural.”
“No problem. After all, it was quite an honor to be thought of as Soriana’s boyfriend by her sisters.” Sieural smiled.
Soriana blushed a deep crimson, while Shiriana laughed. “Like I said, you don’t deserve someone as hard working as Sory.”
“Well, then. Is there a way I should can myself?” Sieural asked, grinning.
Soriana sighed, as Shiriana continued, “There is no way! You’ll never be good enough for someone like Sory!”
Soriana, who had decided that the conversation had gone on long enough, hit Shiriana lightly on the head, and said, “Enough, Shiri.”
“Fine.”
Without warning, Ariana began crying loudly, and hugged Sieural.
“Eh?” Sieural, confused, didn’t know what to do.
“That… that isn’t fair for you, Sieural! How could someone burn down your house?” Ariana, with tears flowing freely, asked.
“Oh… well… that will probably remain a mystery. All I can do now is fight through it. Besides, it’s all in the past.” Sieural said, smiling.
“You know, Shiri, he was the one who wanted to sleep on the grass near his home. He didn’t want to live here at first.” Soriana commented.
“Really? Why not?”
“I didn’t want to be too much of a problem. Besides, now that I know that she has two younger sisters… I would have definitely been more stubborn about my decision. She already has to take care of you two. I’m just more of a burden.”
“That’s not true!” Ariana and Soriana said in unison, as Shiriana shrugged.
“You’re not a burden!” The oldest and youngest sister continued.
“Thanks, you two. Really, thank you so much.” Sieural smiled.
“Whatever.” Shiriana sighed, as she walked up the stairs and to her room.
Soriana giggled, and said, “Don’t worry. Shiri’s just like that.”
“I guess so.”
“She likes you too.” Ariana smiled cheerfully, a stark contrast to the tears she had just shed.
“I heard that, Ari.” Shiriana called out from the second floor.
“Oopsies.” Ariana giggled.
“Anyway, Sieural, the bath is ready. Go ahead and use it if you want.” Soriana commented.
“Thanks. I’ll do that.” Sieural nodded, and walked upstairs.
However, as he opened the door of the upstairs bathroom, an almost-naked Shiriana stood just in front of him.
“Ahhhhhh!!! Get out!!!!” Shiriana yelled.
Sieural closed the door quickly and sighed. “Sorry.”
He walked downstairs, and sat down at the table that Soriana and Ariana sat at.
“What happened?” Soriana asked.
“Shiriana was about to take a bath also.” Sieural replied, sighing.
“Oh…”
“Yeah… Still can’t take a bath. I guess I’ll wait until after.”
At that point, Soriana’s mother, who had just finished cooking, walked back into the house.
“Hi, everyone.” She said, with a smile.
“Ah! Mommy! What’s for dinner?” Ariana asked, enthusiastically.
“Hm… Vegetable stew, and some fish. That okay?”
Ariana nodded, and asked, “Can I help?”
“Sure. You can chop the vegetables.”
Ariana smiled brightly, and walked to her mother’s side.
As Ariana and her mother worked, Shiriana, still blushing, walked down into the main room.
Immediately, she yelled, “You!! Don’t you know to knock to see if anyone’s in the bathroom?!”
“I lived alone… what did you expect?” Sieural sighed.
“…Still.”
“I’m sorry, though. I’ll knock next time.”
“…Okay, then.” Shiriana, still blushing furiously, sighed.
“Anyway, I can take a bath now, right?” Sieural asked.
“Yeah, you can.”
“Ahhhhhh!!!” Ariana yelled.
“Oh, no.” Her mom interjected.
Sieural turned around to see Ariana drenched in the broth of the vegetable stew.
“Are you okay, Ari?” Soriana asked, running over to her side.
“Mhm… I’m just wet…”
Sieural sighed. “Go take a bath. You need it right now more than me.”
“Umm… But…” Ariana began to protest.
“Don’t worry. You should take one before me anyway.” Sieural continued.
“Umm… then… do you want to take one with me?” Ariana asked, blushing.
“Ehhh?!!” Shiriana and Soriana exclaimed in surprise.
“No, no… he can’t do that! He’s a pervert!” Shiriana yelled.
Sieural simply sighed.
“… I don’t think so.” Ariana replied, still blushing. “And… if I go first… He has to take a bath during dinnertime…”
In the end, Shiriana and Soriana allowed Sieural to take a bath with Ariana.
As the two walked up the stairs, Shiriana yelled, “If you do ANYTHING to Ari, I will hurt you!!”
“I won’t do anything.” Sieural sighed.
As Sieural and Ariana walked into the bathroom, Ariana commented, “I used to take baths with my big brother all the time…”
“I see. Is that why you wanted to take one with me?”
Ariana nodded. “I kinda miss Sei-Sei… So…”
“Want me to be your big brother for now?”
Ariana blushed and nodded again.
“Okay, then.” Sieural smiled. “I think I can do that.”
“Yay! Can I call you Sayu?”
“Sayu? Well, if it makes you happy, sure.
“Yaaaaay!” Ariana smiled sweetly and jumped into the bathtub.
Sieural sighed, and walked in to the bathtub along with her.
~~~~~
The two walked down the stairs, and into the main room, where the stew was just placed on the table. Ariana held Sieural’s arm as they entered the room, and the moment Shiriana saw this, she yelled, “YOU!!! What did you do to Ariana?!!”
“He became my brother!” Ariana smiled.
“What?” Shiriana asked, confused.
“I miss Sei-Sei… So, I made Sayu-Sayu my new big brother!”
“Sayu-Sayu?” Soriana giggled.
“Shush, Soriana.” Sieural sighed.
“Sorry. Actually… I’ve thought of calling you that sometimes…” Soriana replied, blushing.
“You and Ariana are so alike.” Sieural laughed weakly, and began eating.
“People tell us that a lot.” Ariana said. “They always say that me and Soriana are like Mommy, and Shiriana is like Daddy.”
As Ariana said that, Sieural noticed a small feeling of unsettlement on Shiriana’s face.
“Oh… Where is your dad, anyway?” Sieural asked.
“He was killed in the war 8 years ago.” Soriana’s mother answered.
“I’m sorry. I… didn’t expect that. Miss… umm…”
“You can call me Hal.”
“Ah… I’m sorry, Miss Hal.” Sieural continued.
“No ‘Miss’ please. It makes me sound old. Too old for someone who has to take care of these three.” Hal smiled. “And, it’s fine. I don’t have enough time to sentimental about my husband.”
“Ah. Okay, then.” Sieural replied.
Sieural finished his meal quickly, and stood up. “Thank you very much for the food.”
“No problem.” Hal replied, as she also stood up, carrying her bowl.
She was soon followed by her three daughters, and almost in unison, they placed their bowls into the sink. After that, Soriana and Ariana walked up the stairs and into their rooms. Sieural followed the two, and entered his new room, in a new house… in a new life.
He sat down on the soft velvety chair in his room and sighed. He stared out the lightly tinted window, into the darkness of the night. Out towards the remains of his wooden house. As he looked around he saw Shiriana standing beneath the pink-flowered tree that he would always see on the way to the Miltary Academy.
Sieural stood up and walked outside to the tree that Shiriana was standing under. He walked over quietly, not allowing Shiriana to notice him.
“Hey.” Sieural said, as he neared Shiriana”
“O-oh… What are you doing out here?” Shiriana replied, without turning around.
“Well, you looked kinda lonely. I just figured you could use someone to walk with.”
“I’m fine.”
Quietly, he walked around Shiriana, and looked at her eyes. They were wet with tears. The moment Shiriana noticed that Sieural was in front of her, she turned around again.
“Okay… why the tears?”
“I’m not crying!” Soriana exclaimed.
“I’ve noticed you being sad ever since dinner. Did something happen?”
“I said I was fine!”
“… You’re just like him, Shiri.” Soriana said, as she walked out to the two.
“What do you mean by that?” Shiriana asked.
“Sieural always says he’s fine. He doesn’t like other people’s help.” Soriana smiled.
“Now that I think of it, you’re right.” Sieural grinned.
When Shiriana did not reply, Sieural asked again, “So, what’s wrong?”
Shiriana shook her head. “I… I can’t say it in front of Sory…”
“If you promise to tell Sayu—,” Soriana began.
“Don’t call me that!”
“Sorry.” Soriana giggled. “If you promise to tell Sieural, then I’ll leave for now.”
Shiriana nodded.
“Okay, then. As long as you can tell someone, then I’m happy.” Soriana smiled, as she walked towards the house.
As she left, Shiriana said, “It’s not fair.”
“What isn’t?” Sieural replied.
“Just that… Ari and Sory… they all are told that they’re like my mom… and I’m like my dad… but it isn’t fair… because Dad’s gone, and so…” Shiriana’s eyes once again began welling with tears.
“Why do you want to be like someone?”
“Huh?”
“Do you want to be like your mom?”
“Kind of…”
“Why?”
“Well, Mom is really nice… and she cares a lot for us…”
“Well, from what I’ve seen,” Sieural smiled, “You’re already like that. You’re nice, especially to your sisters. And you care a lot for them too. If that’s all you want to be like… then you’ve already got that.”
“But… when people say that I’m like Dad, it’s not fair… because he’s not here… and I feel like the odd one out.”
“Oh, I see. Well, if that’s your problem, instead of people saying that you’re like your dad, then you can say that you’re like me, instead!” Sieural grinned.
“Stupid. I’m not a pervert or an idiot. I’m not mean either.”
“Well, that was pretty mean. And… well, if I was a pervert… then I’d be doing things to you right now that you wouldn’t like.” Sieural laughed, as Shiriana instinctively took a step backwards. “Besides, I already said that was an accident!”
“I know, I know… I was just joking. But I still don’t forgive you.” Shiriana smiled.
Sieural sighed a sigh of relief. “Well, at least you finally smiled.”
“Eh?” Shiriana blushed.
“I was trying to get you to smile. Wasn’t that hard, was it?”
“I guess not.” Shiriana replied, frowning once more. “Oh… I’ve always been wanting to ask, but how did the fire start at your house.”
“I don’t know… I don’t think anyone knows. I wasn’t there… but still.”
“Can we go take a look?” Shiriana asked.
“Sure, why not.”
As the two walked towards the burned-down house, Sieural asked, “Wait, so what grade are you in?”
“9th. So, I’m three years younger than you. I’m 14.” [SH1] [i]Shiriana replied.
“Ah… And Ariana?”
“She’s in the 2nd grade. She’s 9.”
“I feel kind of stupid, not even knowing my friend’s sisters’ ages.”
“That’s because you are.” Shiriana grinned.
“Shush.” Sieural also grinned. “But anyway, I’ve never seen you and Ariana around the school.”
“Us two stay in the Apostle’s Field [SH2] [ii]area of the school.”
“Magicians, huh? That sounds cool.”
“It is. So much more so than a warrior.”
“You’re probably right.”
“Hey, you can’t say that about the path you chose! You have to like practicing swordplay to choose it.”
“That’s true. Anyway… what rank[SH3] [iii] are you?”
“I’m a Yellow Iron A[SH4] rank.”
“You’re pretty good, then. Maybe we should spar some time.” Sieural grinned.
“I’m not that good… Ariana… she’s really good.”
“Really?”
“Yeah… Yellow Iron SS rank…”
“SS?! Wow. I’ll be sure not to make her mad anytime soon.”
“Hah… and Sory is the second best swords-fighter in the school. I’m just mediocre.” Shiriana sighed.
“She’s second, huh?”
“Yeah. I wonder who’s first.”
“I never noticed those things. I don’t know, sorry.”
“I didn’t expect you to know. Idiot.”
Sieural sighed. “You really are mean.”
Just then, Oaklyn, who was also out for a walk, tackled Sieural from the back. “Hitting on Soriana’s sister now, I see.”
“I am not!”
“I’m joking! If you’re being so defensive, it might just be true!”
Shiriana laughed, while Sieural sighed.
“Hi, Oaky.” Shiriana smiled.
“Hi, Shiri. What are you guys talking about?”
“I was asking about Shiriana and Ariana’s ranks as mages. Which reminds me… Oaklyn, did you know that Soriana is the second ranked fighter in our school?” Sieural asked.
“Yeah.”
“Oh, who’s first, then?” Sieural and Shiriana asked in unison.
“You don’t know, Sieural?”
“Should I?”
“I really would think so.” Oaklyn sighed. “Idiot.”
“What!? Why am I an idiot now?”
“Because you are!” Oaklyn laughed.
“Umm… Oaky, who’s the first ranked fighter?” Shiriana asked.
“Do you really want to know?”
“Yes!”
Oaklyn walked over to Sieural, and grabbed his wrist.
“Huh?” Sieural asked, confused.
Oaklyn raised his hand high in the air, and said, “This guy right here.”
“What?!!!!!” Both Sieural and Shiriana exclaimed.
“Yeah. Amazing, huh? This idiot is the best in our school.”
“No way! But…”
“Anyway, I should get going. Got some things to do.” Oaklyn said, as she walked off.
“I feel bad for calling you an idiot.” Shiriana said.
“Don’t worry. I am.” Sieural grinned.
“But, still, it’s not fair. I’m surrounded by the best of the school…yet I’m not even that good.” Shiriana’s eyes began welling with tears yet again.
“Don’t worry! It doesn’t mean much.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“If we were ever to go to battle, there would be no meaning for those ranks. We’re all going to work together when we fight. If I was in the same group as you, then I know we’ll be fine. Because it’s about working together, and not those ranks that evaluate us separately.”
“I guess you’re right.” Shiriana replied, but was still crying.
“Okay, stop crying. You’re making me feel sad.”
“Sorry.”
“Ah, don’t worry. Just try harder than everyone, and you’ll be better than anyone.” Sieural smiled.
“Thanks…” Shiriana had calmed down, and began walking again.
Sieural took the sleeve of his shirt, and wiped Shiriana’s face with it.
“No crying, okay? You’ll be fine.”
“Don’t treat me like a kid.”
“Sorry. I thought you would like it better if I did it that way than think of you as an adult.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Don’t know. Your personality, I guess.”
“You’re good at catching people’s personalities, you know?”
“I get told that a lot.”
“It’s not fair.”
“Enough with that. What’s not fair now?”
“That Sory gets you.”
“What?”
“… Umm… Didn’t you know that Sory likes you?”
“…”
“You didn’t?!”
“I can’t say honestly that I did.”
“You stupid!!! I thought you knew that she did! That’s why I said it!”
“Umm…”
“Anyway, don’t tell her that I said that to you!”
“Hah, okay. I won’t.” Sieural laughed.
Shiriana sighed, and asked, “But, do you like Sory?”
“I don’t know. Do you expect me to know my feelings this quickly?”
“I guess not… but, you like her as a friend right?”
“Of course. She’s amazingly kind, caring, and… well, cute.”
“Then?”
“I just don’t know. I might love her. At the moment, my mind is still messed up.”
“Well, I guess that’s normal.”
“Do you like someone?”
“…” Shiriana blushed, and after a moment of silence, replied, “Yes.”
“Who?”
“Secret.”
“Okay, then… would I know him?”
“… Yes.”
“Well, that narrows it down a lot.”
Shiriana did not reply, and simply turned away from Sieural. Noticing that he had embarrassed Shiriana, Sieural stopped the conversation.
After a few minutes of walking, Sieural said, “Okay… we’re here.”
“And you don’t know what caused it?” Shiriana asked, looking around the field.
“Nope.”
“Fire magic.”
“What?”
“Don’t you think it’s odd that not even the grass around the house is burned?”
“I didn’t notice.”
“Stupid.”
“Sorry, I don’t know a thing about magic. I didn’t know to look at it.”
“Stupid. But, yeah. It’s fire magic.”
“Anyway, isn’t it too dark to even see the grass? I can’t tell whether it’s burned or not.”
“My eyes are good. But, if you want to see…”
Shiriana lifted her hand, and created a fireball in her hand. Using the light from the flame, Sieural could see the grass. He made sure to recognize that not even the grass around his house was even singed.
“Yeah, you’re right. It’s not burned. Still, it’s amazing that you could notice it so quickly. You’re amazing too.” Sieural smiled.
Shiriana blushed, and turned away. She dissipated her flame, and said, “Amazing… yeah right. What’s amazing is how you can go through something like this and still feel fine. You’re not one of those depressing people that keeps all this stuff inside them, are you? You don’t like… cry yourself to sleep at night, do you?”
She grinned, as Sieural replied, “No, of course not. At least, I don’t think.”
“I didn’t think so.” Shiriana continued to grin, as she placed her hand on my shoulder.
“I hope I didn’t portray that kind of person.”
“Nope. Just wondering. Anyway, we should be getting back home, huh.”
“Yeah. Let’s go.”
“Oh, umm… Sieural, thanks for walking with me. I feel a lot better.” Shiriana replied, with a bright smile.
